CHAPTER 10
Tedâs Scoop
At nine oâclock sharp Ted and Nelson drove up in front of the Ewer home.
âThink weâre too early?â Ted wondered. âIâd hate to get them out of bed.â
âThe way they were going last night, I doubt if they even went to bed. You think this really is what we think it is, Ted?â
âSure looks like it.â
âBut what are you going to do if weâre wrong?â
âDo some fast back-pedaling, I guess. We donât want to tip them off about the scouts if none of them has showed up yet. Weâll just ask them about Fredâs plans for next summer, or something like that.â
Ted rang the bell. It was answered by Mr. Ewer.
âWhy, Ted . . .â He hesitated. âI donât know . . .â
But his wife appeared behind him. âOh, Tedâand Nelson. Come on in, boys. Weâre glad to have you. I suppose you realize whatâs happened, and thatâs why youâre here. We promised not to say anything, but if you guessed, I donât see how we could help that.â
They were shown into the living room, and Fred soon came downstairs to join them. It didnât take more than a glance to show that he was bubbling over about something.
âWe noticed your lights on late last night,â Ted began as they were seated, âand we thoughtâwell, you know how rumors get around.â
âAnd this one was right,â Fred exploded joyfully. âCan I tell them, Dad?â
âI guess itâs all right. Itâll have to be.â
âWell, then, Iâm all signed up for the big leagues! I mean, Iâve signed up for one of the farm teams, but it ought to lead there in a few years.â
Ted and Nelson offered quick congratulations. Then Ted asked:
âWhat was the name of the scout who signed you?â
âMr. Hill. Why, do you know him?â
Ted nodded. âWeâve met him. As a matter of fact, he asked us a few questions about you.â
âThen you must have given him the right answers, because he showed up last night with a contract in his pocket. Maybe Iâve got you to thank for this.â
âNelson had more to do with it than I did,â Ted informed him. âHeâs seen you play more than I have.â
âWell, then, thanks, Nel,â said Fred, turning to Nelson.
âOh, I didnât do anything,â Nelson protested. âIf you made it, you made it on your own ability.â He looked a little worried. âBut wasnât this rather sudden? I should think you would have waited to see if any other offers came in.â
âThat might have been wiser,â Mr. Ewer spoke up, âbut he said he had to leave today. He offered to leave the contract, but he said if we didnât sign, he would have to consider it as unfinished business, and recognize the possibility that some other scout might step in, so he would act accordingly. I called up a lawyer about it, and he said it was all right, so we signed. Mr. Hill told us frankly that if we thought Fred might qualify for a big bonus, then weâd be better off waiting, and that he wouldnât enter into that kind of bid.
