CHAPTER 10

Ted’s Scoop

At nine o’clock sharp Ted and Nelson drove up in front of the Ewer home.

“Think we’re too early?” Ted wondered. “I’d hate to get them out of bed.”

“The way they were going last night, I doubt if they even went to bed. You think this really is what we think it is, Ted?”

“Sure looks like it.”

“But what are you going to do if we’re wrong?”

“Do some fast back-pedaling, I guess. We don’t want to tip them off about the scouts if none of them has showed up yet. We’ll just ask them about Fred’s plans for next summer, or something like that.”

Ted rang the bell. It was answered by Mr. Ewer.

“Why, Ted . . .” He hesitated. “I don’t know . . .”

But his wife appeared behind him. “Oh, Ted–and Nelson. Come on in, boys. We’re glad to have you. I suppose you realize what’s happened, and that’s why you’re here. We promised not to say anything, but if you guessed, I don’t see how we could help that.”

They were shown into the living room, and Fred soon came downstairs to join them. It didn’t take more than a glance to show that he was bubbling over about something.

“We noticed your lights on late last night,” Ted began as they were seated, “and we thought–well, you know how rumors get around.”

“And this one was right,” Fred exploded joyfully. “Can I tell them, Dad?”

“I guess it’s all right. It’ll have to be.”

“Well, then, I’m all signed up for the big leagues! I mean, I’ve signed up for one of the farm teams, but it ought to lead there in a few years.”

Ted and Nelson offered quick congratulations. Then Ted asked:

“What was the name of the scout who signed you?”

“Mr. Hill. Why, do you know him?”

Ted nodded. “We’ve met him. As a matter of fact, he asked us a few questions about you.”

“Then you must have given him the right answers, because he showed up last night with a contract in his pocket. Maybe I’ve got you to thank for this.”

“Nelson had more to do with it than I did,” Ted informed him. “He’s seen you play more than I have.”

“Well, then, thanks, Nel,” said Fred, turning to Nelson.

“Oh, I didn’t do anything,” Nelson protested. “If you made it, you made it on your own ability.” He looked a little worried. “But wasn’t this rather sudden? I should think you would have waited to see if any other offers came in.”

“That might have been wiser,” Mr. Ewer spoke up, “but he said he had to leave today. He offered to leave the contract, but he said if we didn’t sign, he would have to consider it as unfinished business, and recognize the possibility that some other scout might step in, so he would act accordingly. I called up a lawyer about it, and he said it was all right, so we signed. Mr. Hill told us frankly that if we thought Fred might qualify for a big bonus, then we’d be better off waiting, and that he wouldn’t enter into that kind of bid.
